I loved this. To find true “Fans”, Burger King asked Facebook users if they wanted a free Big Mac (yes, you read that right, they bought coupons from the competition) or to stay FB fans.
Those who “sold out” and went for the free sandwich were asked for their info, mailed a coupon for the free sandwich and a Dear John letter basically saying eff off forever from Facebook, and the “true” fans were invited to the new BK FB page that the others were then banned from…because the untrue “fans” just always hung around the page complained about the brand and demanded discounts/free food without much loyalty to any fast food company. Once again, an example of how quantity does indeed trump quality. h/t Fast Company
